When do you know you are getting old?

Long time ago, I heard somebody say that "you know you are old when your idols are younger than you". Or maybe he was saying that you know you are not young :). Anyhow, I past that already some time ago and as such, I don't really like the definition... :)

Yesterday I heard Mario Conde (a famous guy in Spain) say that "you are old when your memories outnumber your illusions". Nice one.

PS.: (update 1/30/2011) I just found something very similar from Gabriel Garcia Marquez:
"It is not truth that the people stop pursuing their dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing their dreams".

  1. Hi my name is André! I'm from Brazil and I'd like to make one more observation about getting old. This one is mine: "You know that your getting old when your friends start to have kids.". I think this is probably correct, because I'm not talking about one or other but for some of them.
By the way, I stumbled here because of your OpenCV session. Can I use the codes for my thesis of my college?
Will be a VOIP with biometrics via webcam. It's very important and I'll cite you on my work.
Anyway thank you for the attention.

  2. HA HA! Yes, I know... Well in my case, my friends back in my home country got kids and I still didn't feel old... Then, my new friends, a generation later, are getting kids, and yeah... I started to wonder if I should be filling old :). But no, I still think I have a lot of things looking fwd in front of me.. There is something wrong with me :P.

Anyhow, about the code, of course! I put it out there to return back all the learning and tools I got from the net. Anybody can use it for whatever they want and up to you to mention or not my name (unless one day I say otherwise on some future very cool post :) ). Just apply ethics/honor code... For instance, I wouldn't like another guy having a blog made cut and paste of my posts. And probably a professor wouldn't like a student copying this and presenting it like his work... So, yeah, all yours and thanks for asking! Good luck!

  3. Thank you so much! You don't know how much your code will help me! I will mention you if I use your code and mention that you authorized me. Your learning is very rare on the internet and there's no book that covers this subject with java, only with C/C++.
So I'm gonna try to learn with your explanations to see if I get the point. There are a lot of materials in here.
So keep on the great job you are doing.
    Thanks in Advance!
