EV battery size and cost

Being checking a bit on EVs now that Tesla is hot (I think >$2k/share is a joke, you read it here first :)). Still, the EV (which BTW were not invented by Tesla) are cool. Even Teslas are cool (just the stock price is a joke). Note: I am checking also FCEV (look super cool too). 

Anyhow, quick calculation from the offering on this site (they explain it really well so you just can read it there). A Tesla 5.3kWh (444 batteries as 74p6s) pack costs $1580 ($300/kWh) and is 68 x 28 x 7.5 cm. 10 of these packs would give you about 53kWh which is close to Model 3 smallest battery (50kWh) and can take you (if you believe the BS-EPA rating from Tesla) to 354Km. Would love to see you try that, Tesla fan ;) but still pretty good even if falls short of that (see bottom of this post). Assuming same "marketing" trickery, we can guess we can get about 275 km with that battery pack.

So, to summarize it, it takes about $57 and about 0.5 liter of volume per km of autonomy

Notice though that this is for the full Tesla module. In the same website we can check the price of the individual cells (Panasonic 18650): 200 cells (3Ah/cell, or ~2.3kWh) for $600. This is actually not much cheaper than just buying the Tesla module, about $1330 for the 444 cells on that module and you got everything else with it (cooling, assembly...), done on the Gigafactory.

So, what to do with this stupid battery? ;)

PS.: On the range (what I call BS-EPA), this video measures few cars in a real life scenario. The link should bring you straight into the results part. As summary:

  1. Nissan Leaf: 62kWh, 208 miles in the test, 87% of the EPA promised range (what I call the BS-EPA range).
  2. Jaguar I-Pace: 90kWh, 223, 76%
  3. Mercedes EQ: 80kWh, 194, 75% 
  4. Audi e-tron: 95kWh, 206, 81%
  5. Kia e-Niro: 64kWh, 255, 90%
  6. Tesla model 3 Long range: 75kWh, 270, 78% 

Based on #6, the real range would be 78% of 354km = 276km

Oil consumption and white smoke on my Golf GTI mkV

Here is my post in the forum
Based on their replies, pointed me to the PCV (positive crank case ventilation) system.
How I checked it. (all you need Torx 25, a.k.a. T25, screwdriver, very simple). Another video with a bit more detail on how to test the valve once it is out. Note: When I see their hoses in the videos, they look really messed up with oil but mine were in that sense pretty clean.

Also, I saw the under-car splash engine shield with lots of oil. I don't know if that was because of the bad installation the oil shop did of the oil filter (so, something dirty from the past) or is it something new. But if that was the problem, my mechanic should have seen it when I brought it in, so, I don't think it was. Or maybe they thought it came all from the filter and there was a different problem? But recall that the oil guys told me I was very low and they didn't report any leaks. They did report a lot of sludge on the oil, which is a symptom of the blow-by mixing with the oil if the PCV does not work...

Now, if you want to know how the PCV works in the GTI MkV, Howardc64 does a great job explaining that in this forum post. I copy it here in case they take the other one down one day. You may not understand all what is written the first time you read it (I didn't), so, I put some Youtube videos below that may help you with engine concepts, but I have to say that he did a very good job at explaining this:
"First, a quick explanation of blow by gasses and why all this vacuum stuff. When cylinder combustion occurs, some gasses will leak past the piston rings. This basically blows air into the crank case and need to be vented to prevent the pressure from pressing out of weak spots like oil seals. Crankcase has open air path to the head so common leak places are oil filler cap, cam seals and rear main seal depending on the different turbo engines. So how do we vent this pressure? On turbo cars, it needs 2 paths.

Path 1 is intake manifold when there is vacuum (pistons draws in air creating the vacuum). This vacuum will suck out the blow by pressure into the intake manifold and crankcase/head pressure will become negative or neutral. But what happens when turbo is boosting and pressurizing the air into intake manifold? There is no more vacuum so what do we do?

Path 2 is to vent this pressure to between the air filter and turbo. Usually just before the turbo. There isn't much vacuum here since air filter doesn't restrict much air to create high vacuum. But it is clearly a good place to dump excess blow by pressure.

On 2.0TFSi, path 1 is what is commonly referred to as the front PCV and path 2 is commonly referred to as rear PCV.

Path 1 has a check valve supposed to stop sending pressurized air into the head+crankcase whenever IM (intake manifold) is pressurized! The check valve suppose to close and relies on the path 2. This check valve in path 1 seems to have high failure rate. People use 2 solutions 1) add a stronger check valve (Digital Hippie Mod) or 2) choose to block off path 1 and just rely on path 2 (I think simpler and less failure) Lots of "PCV delete" kits out there for solution #2.

Now onto path 2. This is NOT a vacuum source. It is mostly a venting source. When turbo pulls in the air, there is plenty of air supplied from the air filter path. No huge vacuum will be created, maybe the tiniest. But you can certainly vent blow by gasses in here without any issue. And when venting, crank case pressure will be slightly positive but not enough to push past any oil seals so its fine. This path has to vent whenever IM is pressurized. Any check valve in this path has to 1) open whenever there is positive pressure coming out the valve cover port for this path 2) probably closes whenever there is vacuum at this port. In any case, this pipe has to be able to blow air towards the turbo intake whenever the port is blowing pressurized air.

In reality, I think path 2 sucking some air back into the crank case from front of the turbo is not an issue. You just want to equalize crank case pressure. If IM suction is so high that it draws air from front of the turbo, probably not a problem. Volvo turbos I worked on works this way. How much air flow all depends on pipe/hose/inlet sizes rather than check valves.

Furthermore, the air flow rate of path 2 is important. The higher the flow rate, the more blow by gas it can vent and reduce crank case pressure. On Volvo turbo cars, people have up sized path 2 to handle higher crank case pressure as engine got older and rings allowed for more blow by.

Anyhow, this is the only sense I can make of the check valve inside the rear PCV breather (path 2) and which way it opens and closes.

And of course for those who don't want to dump oily crank case gas into the intake path, a catch can be installed.

You can see the pipe on the top right the "crankcase breather". On my same forum post you can see:
"There are two different PCV's and two different rear breather tubes and they need to be paired together properly. [See pics in the post]; pcv w/check valve goes with rear tube w/no check valve...and then the next pair(newer revision and recommended) - [AND MINE]; pcv w/no check valve (06F 129 101 P) goes with rear tube w/check valve (06F 103 215 B). It is possible the diaphragm, inside the large disc portion, of the pcv isn't sealing and routing properly under vacuum...allowing vapor to enter the turbo inlet rather than routing it to the intake manifold directly. It could be a combination of issues as well. The forementioned rocker cover come apart inside is one. How you choose to proceed is up to you. Because you have a bunch of oil coming out of the turbo outlet...first; you need a new seal (3C0 145 117 B) there on the upper turbo outlet hose. Remove the PCV again and determine if you have the older or newer pcv. Replace just the pcv if it is the newer (hopefully it was replaced correctly if replaced previously) and both pcv and rear tube if the older. That's where I would begin"

In case you have to work on the check valve of the back (rear PCV), here is a video.

Another guy advised to check inside the upstream intercooler hose (from turbo to IC) to see if the oil was inside. The IC sits between the engine radiator (on its back, towards the engine) and the AC radiator (in front of it). To get to that hose you got to remove the front passenger wheel.

Found this article where it says that VW considers ok to consume 1 quart every 1k miles.
I can't believe I missed so many links talking about my car brand consuming so much oil. Anyhow, here is a good one with some recommendations to follow on things to check and oil to use.


*** CHECKING THE TURBO ***

So, I have a new theory. A turbo leak. Oil refrigerating the turbo leaks into the exhaust. One can read few cases out there. Also could be the coolant (which then gives a white smoke). Actually I had just refilled both oil and coolant and both are low after my engine put out a lot of smoke the other day.

Dealer confirmed is the turbo ~~><~~
Repair at the dealer $3k. Turbo (06F145701H) from dealer alone is $1.7k. Looks like you can buy a rebuilt one for $350 or so, but also found these cheaper new alternatives: BorgWarner for $970 and STIGAN ($650 after discount)

Checked with my usual mechanic and here is his estimate:
Turbo (06F145701H): $600 for manpower + turbo cost. If I buy the Stigan (which runs now for $580) they don't guarantee the job. If they buy it for me, they'll add $200 commission but they'll guarantee the job.
Front-right axel: $320. It made a bit of noise but seems ok so far...
Fan assembly: $500 (according to the dealer, one of my two fans has stopped working). If the other goes, I am toast.Quick search, though, shows that I can do this myself

For a second I had a doubt between these two:
  1. The first one clearly says is compatible with the  06F-145-701-H. Costs $588.
  2. The second one is also recommended for my car by the site, but it does not list the same PN for the turbo. It does say it is a replacement for the BPY engine which is mine (found this nice article explaining it). It is $550 and comes with the kit.
I was doubting till I notice that the second uses the same turbocharger part number: 40-30176 SG. I think I'll give it a try.

GTI mkV cargo trunk liner mat

Stupid oil spill on my mat made it very messy...
Trying to clean it but if I need to buy something to replace it, the original is almost $200!?! You can also get them use for $100... These may not be bad alternatives for about $30 (are soft though so gotta put something underneath):

Replacing ipod adapter from GTI MKV with AUX in

You are here, so, I'll skip the why :)
The problem is well described here: "Basically the factory iPod adaptor replicates a external 6 disc CD changer to the headunit in the dash. This is why the iPod dock is limited to 6 playlists. In the bottom of that tray the dock is in there is a 12 pin connector that plugs in to a printed circuit board and the dock plugs in to it."
You can't just bypass plug to that connector on the audio pins of the ipod connector.

The CableJive solution looked promising. On one side it plugs to the ipod connector (tricking the controller to think that it is an ipod) and on the other had the aux. But in the page says it does not work well with VW: "Does not work with: ALL factory installed car audio systems 2008 and newer. Any and all factory systems (pre & post 2008) from Volkswagen, Audi, Nissan, Infiniti, Toyota, Lexus, & Mazda "

A basic ipod to aux adapter like this one doesn't seem to work either, based on what they say on the description :(

Found also this one from Avery but it seems to work for VW MDI. I.e., watch because it is not the same and in the list actually there is no VW listed!

The enfig looks like the easiest way There is actually a whole list of products and that is the question, what to buy. It looks like they were using the VWT-AUX ($70). Somehow they recommend the VW1-AUX ($60) but I think the internal connector won't work (see this video). More videos here. BUT now they are recommending the GW1LVWT. I think the difference is that it has the stupid iPod cable WHICH I DON'T WANT. I think all the boxes for the wired version are basically the same and the difference is on the cables. So, for instance, the other version with the VWT-IPDU-AUX includes the USB (and also the aux cable).

The only thing with this approach is that we need to find a way to get the cable out so that we can plug it... But maybe instead of doing it through the top (drilling a whole in a new box) we can do it through the bottom (see how they install the cable from the front switches by the stick to the back).

The other possibility would be to get the BT one. There are two versions for that (one with a full BT box supporting calls...) and the other VWT-BTA-AUX which basically is like the above but has a BT interface cable (and still supports the aux). That is $20 more: $89.99. The AUX cable actually is probably not far from that so I think I'm just going to pay for this... Kind of pricey to remove some thing that I hate from the first day :(.

BTW, it seems that actually this is the manufacturer but their direct price is too high!

OBD for VW GTI MKV

This post is under construction. Probably don't want to spend much time on it...

Trying to find what to buy to monitor my HPFP or errors (see other posts on this), although now the car runs nice (after the spark plugs job. Update: it doesn't, see debugging here...). Here is what I learnt:
  1. VCDS® HEX-V2® Enthusiast: The VW tool by excellence. $200. Uses USB.
  2. BlueDriver seems to be well recommended, but not sure it allows me to program the car. It works with many cars. Free app but can't be accessed from other apps.
  3. OBDEleven: lots of people says this is good. Get the PRO for about $80 that allows to program the car... Seems to work only on VW family cars... (Audi, Skoda...). Nice app, you can do everything you want yourself at low level but if you want click-only easy type of mods got to pay. I bought this one as it felt like a good trade-off. Almost regretting not to spent the $200 on the #1 but it's doing ok. My review/explanations here
  4. Open source: but still hardware is expensive because uses some expensive MCU board... Still, the info on that site can teach us how to do ourselves one, if one day we want to.
I may update this back based on my learnings... Just putting it out there.

GTI VW MKV P0087 P2293






Very quick entry in case someone struggling with those codes...
  1. As you already found on the web, this could be a cam follower going bad. In the MKV people says that this can happen quite often and then the whole camshaft has to be replaced (because the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) eats away the cam. That's a $1k job in the dealer + all the other stuff to remove the metal debris from the car. Not nice. So, if you get this code or EPC light and the code is not going away go straight to the dealer. Usually this issue also trigger limp mode (reduce engine power) for safety.
  2. Nevertheless, in my case code came and disappeared after turning on/off the car. Still I went to dealer and the cam follower was ok. Actually they even didn't know what I was talking about when I told them that I read it was an issue with the car. They even didn't have one in stock! Anyhow, they told me there was an error code with the HPFP solenoid (2294) BUT I actually didn't do the job (they said it would cost $550 + $180). They still wanted to charge me the $180 even when they already had the pump out! Instead of putting the old pump in I ask them to put the new one in but they didn't want to do that for the same price as changing the follower >.>
  3. Anyhow, I was planning to do it myself as it looks quite easy (google it...). Nevertheless, I first replaced my spark plugs (I had got a code back 6 months ago that never came back). And boom, car seemed to work beautiful... Probably because that needed fixing too. But...
  4. Update: few days later I lost power several times in high revs. No engine lights up, though. I am going to get the OBD reader to see if I got any codes...
  5. My dad said that it could be the fuel filter (actually car 110k miles and I don't think I ever changed it). Maybe in some routine maintenance long ago, but don't recall. The piece is WK69 6.6bar (although for some mistake I ended up using a 6.4). This guy explains what the 3 pipes do on the filter and what is the regulator. So, found this about how to change it:  
    1. Youtube - It is for an MK6 but really well explained.
    2. Forum write up - I think the best for those hoses is to remove the two rear clips, then remove the filter from the holder. That allows for better finger access to the other clip. And let the car sit overnight and do not open the doors in the morning (as that primes the pump and increases the pressure). Use eye protection! Also I would put a piece of cloth around the connection so that muffles any squirting.

  6. One guy says to put the ignition key on the AC position (power on without turning on the engine?) few times for 30s to purge the fuel line. 
  7. Called a different dealer and they charge me $495 for the pump! Wonder how come they have different prices but anyhow, the Hitachi one on Deutsche Autoparts is $235!
  8. This has a nice explanation of the P2293 and P2294 codes. Only thing is that it seems to say that with voltage, the regulator opens increasing the pressure but a video below says the opposite. Maybe this is talking about the LPFP and the video certainly is talking about the HPFP.
  9. The 2293 is the code that I see all the time. The 2294 is the one that the dealer saw. Not sure I still have it now. So, I still don't want to buy the hpfp till sure. Notice how, for the 2293, they say that a clogged filter could be the reason. People also points to the LPFP or its control module. For the 2294, they said to check the wiring going to the fuel pressure regulator as some times animals chew on it! AMAZING. I saw an empty shell of a nut cracked open inside. This could totally be the reason. Another clue may be that temperature doesn't seem to make a difference (?). All days were actually very cold but things didn't look worse with warmer weather.
  10. Nevertheless, found this ross-tech link of all the codes and it clearly says "Fuel Pressure Regulator Valve (N276): Mechanical Malfunction". As possible solutions does mention fuel filter, for instance:
    1. Check Measuring Values for Fuel Pressure
    2. Check for bent/squeezed Fuel Lines
    3. Check Fuel Pressure System for Leaks
    4. Check Fuel Filter & Filter in Fuel Pump
    5. Check Fuel Quantity supplied by the Fuel Pump
    6. Check Pressure Limiting Valve installed on the high pressure fuel rail when applicable
  11. How about the P0087
  12. N276 valve is the solenoid (fuel pressure regulator). In this link says that ohming it out should show 25 to 30 Ohms. See THIS FULL REPAIR MANUAL for more details. It tells you also how to follow the control wire back to the ECU.
  13. The hpfp can get to 120 bar (normal is between 30 and 110) while low pressure is about 6 bar. Here says that low pressure rail should be 0.5 to 5bar. I wonder if this is reported somewhere in the OBD. 100 psi is about 6.9 bar.
  14. Fuel trim explanation in detail, another level up.
  15. Return vs Return-less fuel systems. Mine is probably return-less because of emissions.
  16. How hpfp system works and how the pump itself works. Notice here that when no voltage is given to the regulator the pressure actually drops (i.e., solenoid must be closed not letting fuel into the HPFP). This is the opposite of what the video says.
  17. Found in the manual how to check the fuel delivery system
  18. Coding. Checking fuel pressure codes here.
  19. Found a kick-ass document describing the whole fuel system: Service Training, Self-study programme 334, The fuel system in FSI engines
  20. Update: changed the fuel filter. Car sounds better. Codes still there but they are from yesterday when I was messing with the hpfp and the intake flow sensor was disconnected. Reset them. Now measuring pump pressure with OBD2. Codes came back. Got a new one too: P310B. This actually now seems to point to the LPFP! I guess changing the filter did something? As it can be seen in the video, the duty cycle should be lower but I am getting very high although the pressure is good
  21. With OBDEleven one can click on gages to see a value, but if what you want to see it's not there, you can go to the control unit. I created a separate post on OBDEleven.
Will post back after I do this change and see if my car goes back to normal...

  1. This guy says that "Generally lpfp issues you have stalling, while hpfp you can still limp it around". That would mean is my HPFP

They say you should hear it click
Can the HP change so fast? I guess so. The other thought would be the sensor, but why the cuts would happen related to the acceleration. A sensor fail should be uncorrelated with that.
It is pretty clear that the load on the LPFP goes to 100% only on reaction to drops on HP, but not so clear on how to get it out of there. Why gets stack

Drive next day after fix
Drive to dinner Everything looks nicely in place. LPFP between 30 and 40%. Most of the drive on secondary streets.
Drive to run. First and last part on secondary streets. Middle in highway.

Time to change my GTI MK5 air filters...

Just to clarify, I am referring to the cabin air filter:

That is pretty straight fwd except for the crawling under the passenger seat. To put back in the filter put it first and then put the cover that snaps, otherwise it's harder. Probably took 10 min first time I did it.

And to the intake air filter:

What you need to know is that the filter is below the engine cover. So, you need to get the cover out first. Follow this. Then take the screws out of the cover, open it up, replace the filter, close it (making sure the hinges get back it, which is the difficult part) and un-do the previous steps. To snap the cover back in, in my case, it just went in by putting pressure, but maybe I was lucky...

Heck, I guess I need a new battery for my MKV

Oh well, my car just didn't start today. It has been acting weird for a while, with one-touch failing and some light (steering wheel, engine...) lighting up at start. Got the car started with a friends jump wires. Looked in Internet and they seem to confirm that it is the battery:

So, I guess this is one of those posts for me not to forget in the future the battery research I am doing...
  1. OEM: Varta. Mine lasted 5 years! That was a good run. Something I need to do is to try to clean the terminals. The ground was looked pretty bad.
  2. Duralast gold: 2 year warranty - Autozone $150 (says 3 years warranty) << This is what I finally got. So far no problems, and I think warranty was longer that listed here.
  3. Interstate or Bosh/Exide ok
  4. Absorbed Glass Mat (9AGM48)/Deka
  5. Some people trash Optima while others recommend it.

Getting the rusted terminal out was really tough. Used coke and baking soda (careful where this drips, it is good to put some clothing around). Finally made enough space to fit a big screw driver between the two edges of the clam (that are closed by the screw, which I had already loosed), and twisted. That made it.

Now I used like some cloth washers and a grease that comes with them (which looks like Vaseline) to protect the terminals from acid rust...

HIDs

My low beam HID (xenon light) died on my GTI :(, so, I read about it and found some nice articles:

The key to success is to place the bulb first on the lamp. Do not try with the holder. No way you can align everything. First practice with the broken bulb. The bulb has the return wire, which goes on bottom (see groove in the lamp) and two notches, a square one (on top) and a round one (to the side). If you place the bulb in the lamp correctly, it'll stay there as long as you don't touch it/shake it. Then, carefully, you bring the plastic holder, with the contact in the bottom, a bit offset to the side. Notice that the holder has two grooves internally, at 180 degrees of each other. These match with the two pivots from the bulb. So, if everything is aligned, the holder will go in, all the way to the lamp, matching grooves with pivots and then you rotate it like 10 degrees and will do "click". Again, practice all this with the old bulb. It is easy and no strength required. The main trouble is the narrow spots to work with. Basically I couldn't avoid my bulb to touch the sides of the lamp as I was placing it, but seems ok...

My car uses D2S. In Autozone I can get Sylvania (PN39223) for $100, 3200 lumens, 4k (temp/color).

Update (2/9/20): The link above is dead. So bought them from Amazon for $45 (nice, they've gone down...). Also I had forgotten to write down the reference of the Philips, so, just pulled my just burnt bulb (driver side) and it says: Philips Germany, D2S, 35W, 85122, E1, 03V, DOT 323A04

I didn't give a try to the ebay types, but may have worked out (not sure).

UPDATE (6/16/2013): My driver side (the other side from the above fix) died today... Just for the record...

UPDATE (2/05/2020): My driver side suddenly changed color to purplish. Still lights up but I am thinking that it may die anytime... We will see...

PS.: By the way, turning off the DRL (day running lights) seems to be only possible through Wagcom. Stupid :(

Tyres for the GTI V

Got 225/45R17

Original tire: Bridgestone Potenza RE050 BW 91W (I guess this is the speed rating W:168mph, one day I'll check them... he he he j/k)
Retails for $243, installed in VW dealership: $289. Discount tire lists: $485 for a pair. (By the way, price is directly proportional to number of tires, nothing hidden...).
UTQG ratings: temp: A, traction: A, treadwear:140  
This tire does NOT have warranty and wears out like hell. First set gone after 15K miles, second after $20k. I drive the car a bit hard and Texas heat must not help, but c'mon!

Total: $275.54 for two tires (this is the price of one Bridgestone!), 50k miles/5 years warranty, treadwear: 420, temp A, traction A, Z speed rating (149mph). By the way, VW dealer cost was $348 and needed a rebate...

All tyres got good reviews, so, I had to pick one and I went for the Continental. Just didn't want to risk to get the cheapest one, in case I notice it on the handling. So far, as I am not racing, I didn't feel any difference, even with aggressive street driving. Paid about $720 with all the insurances...

UPDATE: tires lasted easily 30k. I am changing them again for the same tire. They are now called
Continental ControlContact Sport AS (some marketing deal with Discount Tire), and retail for $149. Should be $376.22 without including the warranty rebate for the previous tires which didn't last 50kmiles...
